Method

Every figure in an extract traces back to the publication, release date and version it came from.

From publication to delivery

  1. Acquisition

National series are downloaded from the authority that publishes them. EU-wide series come from Eurostat, the EEA and EAFO and are labelled as such. The retrieval date, file version and publication reference are recorded at download.

  2. Harmonisation

Manufacturer, brand, model and powertrain names are mapped to one reference list, so a brand is counted the same way in every market. The mapping table is versioned and included with each extract.

  3. Validation

Totals are reconciled against the aggregate the authority itself publishes. Each version ships with a release note quantifying any divergence.

  4. Delivery

Files or feeds with a source manifest. When a source restates a period, the correction ships as a new version with a changelog. Superseded versions remain available, so analysis built on a superseded version can be reproduced exactly.

Source licences

We compile from primary public sources published under terms that permit reuse, and observe each licence: CC BY 4.0 for the European Environment Agency, the Italian ACI, Finnish Traficom and the Polish CEPiK API; CC0 for the Dutch RDW; the Open Government Licence v3.0 for United Kingdom vehicle licensing statistics. Where a source restricts redistribution, as ACEA's monthly releases do, we use it only as a cross-check and say so. We do not resell or repackage third-party commercial databases.

Observed and modelled figures

Modelled figures are never presented as observed ones. Where a series is estimated, interpolated or nowcast, the label is in the data itself, not only in the documentation.

Access conditions

Since 1 February 2025 the Spanish DGT's registration microdata no longer carries the full vehicle identification number; obtaining it requires a substantiated legitimate-interest application. Several authorities publish provisional figures and revise them weeks later. Each release note states which vintage an extract reflects.
